President Bush's State of the Union Speech - January 23, 2007

No mention of Katrina disappoints lawmakers

  • Before speech, La. governor says storm response partisan

  • WASHINGTON — President Bush steered clear of one of the biggest controversies of his administration during the State of the Union speech Tuesday, making no mention of the federal government's plan for Hurricane Katrina-ravaged New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

"Most Americans think it was not handled well so why bring it up?" said Ron Haskins of the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. Haskins also said a mention of Katrina could have prompted jeers from the Democratic majority in the audience.

The Sun Herald | 09/12/2006 | Address by President Bush to the Nation

The Sun Herald | 09/12/2006 | Address by President Bush to the Nation: "Good evening. Five years ago, this date -- September the 11th -- was seared into America's memory. Nineteen men attacked us with a barbarity unequaled in our history. They murdered people of all colors, creeds, and nationalities -- and made war upon the entire free world. Since that day, America and her allies have taken the offensive in a war unlike any we have fought before. Today, we are safer, but we are not yet safe. On this solemn night, I've asked for some of your time to discuss the nature of the threat still before us, what we are doing to protect our nation, and the building of a more hopeful Middle East that holds the key to peace for America and the world.

On 9/11, our nation saw the face of evil. Yet on that awful day, we also witnessed something distinctly American: ordinary citizens rising to the occasion, and responding with extraordinary acts of courage. We saw courage in office workers who were trapped on the high floors of burning skyscrapers -- and called home so that their last words to their families would be of comfort and love. We saw courage in passengers aboard Flight 93, who recited the 23rd Psalm -- and then charged the cockpit. And we saw courage in the Pentagon staff who made it out of the flames and smoke -- and ran back in to answer cries for help. On this day, we remember the innocent who lost their lives -- and we pay tribute to those who gave their lives so that others might live."

WLOX-TV - The News for South Mississippi: Bush: Support, Not Symbolism, Best Way To Remember Victims Of Katrina

WLOX-TV - The News for South Mississippi: Bush: Support, Not Symbolism, Best Way To Remember Victims Of Katrina: "**WLOX's Doug Walker is in Washington, D.C. today for a one on one interview with President Bush about Mississippi's Katrina Recovery. Watch for his exclusive interview Thursday on WLOX News at Six, and of course, right here on WLOX.com!**

President Bush cautioned against placing too much importance on the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's Gulf Coast strike, saying Wednesday it will take a long, sustained effort to rebuild the area.

'It's a time to remember that people suffered and it's a time to recommit ourselves to helping them,'' Bush said. 'But I also want people to remember that a one-year anniversary is just that, because it's going to require a long time to help these people rebuild.''"

He also urged more than 660 graduates to use their education to help their communities recover from the hurricane, which destroyed broad swaths of south Mississippi when it blew ashore Aug. 29.

'I ask you to rise to the challenge of a generation: Apply your skill and your knowledge, your compassion and your character, and write a hopeful new chapter in the history of the Gulf Coast,'' Bush said."

WLOX-TV - The News for South Mississippi: First Lady Makes Surprise Announcement At Biloxi School

WLOX-TV - The News for South Mississippi: First Lady Makes Surprise Announcement At Biloxi School: "Rusty Hunt works from a small corner in Beauvoir Elementary's school library in Biloxi. Hurricane Katrina kicked him out of his brand new library at Gorenflo Elementary and ruined his precious collection of 13,000 books.

'Book shelves were moved around and thrown around and it was a huge mess,' said Rusty Hunt. 'I did not go in, because I was afraid of what it would do to me to see it destroyed.'

Hunt's story touched the hearts of members of the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries. So on Wednesday morning, the First Lady walked into the gutted Gorenflo library to make a surprise announcement."

WLOX-TV - The News for South Mississippi: Bush Visits Hurricane-Damaged Gulf Coast For Progress Report

WLOX-TV - The News for South Mississippi: Bush Visits Hurricane-Damaged Gulf Coast For Progress Report: "Congress is poised to allocate $4.2 billion in flexible community development funds for areas affected by the hurricane, but lawmakers have decided to dedicate that money to all states affected by Katrina. Bush wants Congress to allocate the $4.2 billion just for Louisiana."

Hmmm! I have no doubt that President Bush means well in his efforts to help New Orleans and surrounding parishes to build back as quickly as possible but at the same time Mississippi can not be overlooked. So many promises are made giving us hope for our recovery. I liken it to a carrot dangled before a hungry horse. Six months later they have not materialized. People are anxiously awaiting the money allotted to the State that will help them rebuild their homes and get out of the torturous Fema trailers. Today another carrot was "dangled" saying Chevron MAY expand and become the 2nd largest producer of oil in the country and the 10th largest in the world. Actually, that frightens me ....... to have an oil refinery that can produce 525,000 barrels per day.

All of Mississippi needs help as do our neighbors in Alabama. People are leaving the state and going elsewhere. Three casinos are up and running and more are to be built in the near future That speaks loudly to me, it isn't money from our state that keeps them here and thriving. They fly in the very rich from around the country. Mississippi is the poverty stricken state. remember?

My camera should be fixed in a day or two and I will go take more pictures to show you the lack of progress. At the pace it is moving now, recovery is just a dream.
