Gulf Coast News - Your Mississippi Coast News Source: "Coast residents realize that federal, state programs and insurance companies will not help them rebuild their homes and restart their lives."
Well so much for me not writing about Katrina anymore. I agree with the above as I have lived it every day with my daughter and her family. I have seen she and her husband work so hard to repair their home for themselves and four children and now they are at a standstill. To reiterate, had insurance payed what was due them they would have hired a contractor to make the repairs. There should have been new roofing but they were only allowed enough from insurance to "patch" it. The master bathroom is unusable. High gloss paint on kitchen cabinets are peeling, baseboards around the house are pulling away from the walls, drains in the bathtubs are corroded and the wood floor in the dining room that was thought to be saved is starting to buckle. There is so much more ......!
People are devastated by the loss of their homes, is putting them in a modular home the answer? For the majority and my daughter I don't think so. Had insurance not become "turncoat" and the state assistance grants a surety, they would build or repair their homes to please them.
It didn't take seven months for Mississippians to figure out that once again they have been forgotten.

I have read several reports about the looming 'mental health crisis' on the coast... So many people -- including ourselves -- have been surviving on hope alone. The reality is setting in though.. that what was lost was actually lost. You know that Dave and I are lucky - in that we hopefully have many, many years ahead of us to start over again... But there are so many who will never completely recover. It's truly sad.
