PASCAGOULA -- The mother of a 2-year-old Pascagoula boy who was injured on Christmas Eve while in New York City clarified circumstances surrounding his injury.

Sandy Lopez, mother of Michael Gratereaux, said on Wednesday she and her son were in the process of leaving Macy's department store Christmas Eve when Michael injured his thumb while they were going down an escalator.

'A few people fell in the back of us. My son was pushed down. That is how he got his thumb stuck in the escalator,' Lopez said.

The Associated Press originally reported that the toddler had placed his thumb in the escalator himself, a report Lopez emphatically denied."
